Master's Journal
Ever since my first lessons in the Martial Arts I kept journals of the classes I took and the techniques I learned.  These unofficial records evolved into a daily Martial Arts journal in which I added a new thought each day.

Each day I would add a new technique, an insight into training, a quote I heard and liked or whatever would strike me in the moment.  That journal is now 8 years old and fills a shelf in my library.

I offer the Master's Journal as a weekly Martial Arts thought.
May this effort inspire your very own Martial Artist's Journal.

Bullies, be they school-yard or adult, are are a forced to be faced not feared.  Anyone who uses their power (physical, mental, financial, etc.) violates the spirit of service that is the core of being a Martial Artist.

The true Martial Artist shows compassion to these misguided souls for the Martial Artist understands that such behavior is learned, often through terrible personal circumstances.  The true Martial Artist knows that bullies act from a sense of fear, not a sense of power.

Always seek variety in your individual practice, never allow your practice to fall into the rut of simply repeating your techniques from class.  Imagine yourself in various situations and use your techniques to shadow box your way free.  Let the bonds of commonality fall away and become the unique Martial Artist you are meant to be.

One's natural tendencies are neither good nor bad, it is the outcome of your actions that determine whether they are positive or negative.

Place these natural tendencies within the proper structure and make them serve you.

I find the movie The Karate Kid to be a perfect depiction of the relationship between the Master and the Apprentice.  From time to time a quote from Miyagi Sensei will find its way into my training, for example:

"Never put passion before principle.  Even if you win, you still lose."

Passion is an ally as well as an enemy.  Always keep your Martial Art's prinicples foremost in your mind when you are judging a situation.

I have a great quotation from a program on The History Channel.

"Good judgment comes from experience.  Experience comes from bad judgment."

Wisdom grows from those bad experiences and missteps.  Never allow yourself to become discouraged by the learning process.

Equality emanates from internal understanding, attitude and fortitude.

Simply put, you know deep down that you are equal—you don’t have to be told you are, and can never be told you are not.

Practice begins with repetition which moves to review and evolves into recall.  Make each new, learned and mastered technique your own.

Always lend your assistance to those less experienced in the Martial Arts than yourself.   The lineage of Martial Arts instruction is a closed circle of those who know and those who learn.

A good sense of humor being essential to martial arts training:

I was having a conversation with a friend recently and we were discussing cloning.  I decided if I were to clone myself I would make my clone faster, stronger and smarter than I am through genetic engineering.  Then it occurred to me that my clone might just be a bit too good and would of course have to go.
If I eliminated my clone, would that be murder or suicide?

To confront one's problems headlong and in a timely fashion,
is to trim the shoots of a bamboo garden early.

To procrastinate the actions to solve one's problems
is to allow that same bamboo to grow into an inescapable prison.

Dreams are a pivotal aspect of a martial artist's journey.

Dreams provide the drive and motivation for the formation of goals for training.

Never allow dreams to dominate your training but never train without them.

Those with whom you train in the martial arts are your brothers and sisters,

Not your opponents, nor adversaries and certainly not your enemies.

Competition among siblings is necessary and naturual.

Vengeful aggression is a perversion of that natural necessity.

Throughout our journeys on the our martial arts paths, we must always remember and respect our connections to the past.

Each teacher, partner and master brought us one step forward, even if at the time it seemed like a step back.

We must all realize that the martial artists we've become began with those willing to teach us what they knew.

Martial arts training is not just about techniques.

It is not just about following a particular program.

Nor is it just about training with master.

Martial arts training is about courage.

Courage to face the truth,

courage to stand against aggression,

courage to be oneself.

When all else seems lost,
return to that initial courage with which you began your path.
